CPF Announcements March 5, 2024 CPF Annual Meeting People Saving Places All around the Nation, communities much like Corsicana celebrated history and preservation in honor of May’s designated National Preservation Awareness month. The annual awareness month is supported by the only non-profit national preservation program, The National Trust for Historic Preservation. This year's theme was “People Saving Places,” and was a national high five to everyone doing the great work of saving places in big ways and small – and inspiring others to do the same. ​ The community joined the Corsicana Preservation Foundation on Saturday, May 14th for an amazing Opening Reception & Awards. Projects 2022 Award Recipients: Clayton Goins of Brick Street Brewery for Restoration & Preservation of a Commercial Building - Early 1900s store front building at 224 East 5th Ave. ​ Kyle Hobratschk for the Preservation of Historic Features & Elements for the IOOF building at 100 West 3rd Ave. ​ CISD's Dr. Diane Frost & School Board Members & Sam Houston Elementary School's Staff, Students & Families for the Stewardship of a Historic Landmark for the Sam Houston Elementary School Building built in 1930 as the Frank N. Drane - Junior High School & designed by local architect H.O. Blanding of Corsicana, Texas in Dutch Revival Style. ​ Ashley & Enoch Basnett for the Saving & Restoration of a Historic Home - The 1916 Almond Home located at 1559 West 3rd Ave. ​ Not pictured award recipient, Hugh Stroube. Mr. Stroube received an award for his multi-hat services for the benefit in the preservation of Corsicana & Navarro County, Texas landmarks. Projects Refurbished the Petroleum Park on 12th street along with installation of lighting on the Oil Derrick Retained (paid for) a restoration specialist to identify the original color palette of the Navarro County Court House (Prior to the state funding of the restoration) Refurbished six Scagliolia Pillars in the Court House identified at most risk (Prior to the States restoration program) Led the community drive that raised more than 50% of the funding and grant contributions for the successful restoration of the Navarro County Court House Identified, restored and relocated a full size oil derrick to the 5th Avenue corridor entrance to the Historic Downtown District Developed and published The Carriage District Driving Tour Booklet Conducted walking tours of the Historic Downtown District during city events and for out of town tour groups Designed and built protective housing for the last remaining firing still from the 1898 Magnolia Refinery site at the Sunoco/Exxon Mobile pipeline facility on South 15th St. Contributed funding to the Corsicana Orphan’s Cemetery Preservation Project Took an active role in planning and supporting the 2018 Historic Places and Spaces Corsicana Pop Up Event designed to show how new businesses and ideas can add to economic development while still maintaining the historical elements of the city. The Texas Downtown Association named the event the winner in the Best Promotional Event Category for a town with a population under 50,000 Worked with the City of Corsicana’s Parks & Recreation Department in communicating restoration needs for historic Temple Beth El. CPF helped to obtain a $ 25,000 grant from the Texas Jewish Historical Society and additional private donations of $6,000. Provided historic tours of the Corsicana oil fields, Old City Jail, and Temple Beth El during Derrick Days. Purchased the Wolf Brand Chili Truck and returned it to the city of Corsicana. Provided National Preservation Awareness events. Help to provide support for Corsicana Main Street events. Helped with the recreation of an old oil derrick now housed at Heritage Park Created various fund raising events, such as 2015’s A Trolley Tour & Wurst Fest event in the historic downtown district followed by live music and a live auction, and several seasons of the Oil Barron Ball fund raiser. 2022 Purchased Wesley CME Church out of foreclosure so that it could be transferred to a new owner for restoration. 2023 Provided legal services to help establish Meetinghouse Revival as a 501(c)(3) and provided title work necessary to transfer ownership of Wesley CME Church to Meetinghouse Revival. Conducted Wood Window Repair workshop at 100 West in Downtown Corsicana. Displayed Wolf Brand Chili Truck at 2023 Corsicana Veterans Parade. 2024 Conducted Oil History Tours during 2024 Derrick Days Festival. Carriage District CARRIAGE DISTRICT Carriage District 1846 - 1900 The city of Corsicana has a long and colorful history. This site was chosen in 1848 as the location for the seat of government of the newly formed Navarro County.
